LINES AND SPACES © 2019 by Heather Pierson In the old front room that overlooked the yard Along the back wall standing like a guard Was the big brown box that helped me make sense of the world He found it at the dump and brought it home to me And that was all it took to set my young mind free And that big brown box helped me make sense of the world He taught me lines and spaces She taught me how to read faces The house was always so cold and the ashtray always full And every word she said scratched at me like wool But the big brown box helped me make sense of it all And I was always unsure of how I ought to be Somehow it seemed that that wasn’t up to me But the big brown box helped me make sense of it all He taught me lines and spaces She taught me how to read faces As soon as I’d sit down I’d close my eyes and play What a beautiful pain to wish everything else away Except the big brown box that helped me make sense of the world And now that they’ve all gone, the old piano too I hope I’ve got what it takes to follow what is true That big brown box showed me how to be in the world He taught me lines and spaces She taught me how to read faces He taught me lines and spaces She taught me how to read faces

GOODNESS KNOWS © 2019 by Heather Pierson The day that I turned twenty-one I hated nearly everyone Except that foamy friend in my hand I could knock ‘em back with the best of them But just like all the rest of them I couldn’t see beyond the end of my nose Goodness knows how I’m still here The old man had just turned fifty-one When the cancer’s evil work was done And left Mom and me with no place to stand And from the booze I was set free But she chose not to follow me My love and her fear came to blows Goodness knows how I’m still here Some call it luck Some call it grace I think I’m just more stubborn than most But like momma used to say I come by it honestly The year that I turned thirty-one My mother finished up her run Her hourglass had run out of sand It’d been years since we had spoken Both our weary hearts were broken I’m alone now on the road I chose Goodness knows how I’m still here Some call it luck Some call it grace I think I’m just more stubborn than most But like momma used to say I come by it honestly And now that I’ve seen forty-one My fightin’ years are far from done And the earth is truly the promise land But still those shadows speak to me Each day less convincingly To reach for the thorn and not the rose Goodness knows I’m so glad I’m still here

GET UP ON THAT HORSE AGAIN © 2019 by Heather Pierson I know she gave you a pretty rough ride Get up on that horse again I know it’s easy to let things slide Get up on that horse again The road is bumpy, narrow, and long The ones who built it sang the same damn song Would you rather just give up without having tried Or get up on that horse again? The road is bumpy, narrow, and long The ones who built it sang the same damn song There’s no escaping the hand you’ve been dealt There ain’t a soul among us who hasn’t felt what you’ve felt So would you rather just give up without having tried Or get up on that horse again? Get up on that horse again

DRINK AND DANCE © 2019 by Heather Pierson So many barflies buzzin’ around my stool Nursing my water and tryin’ not to lose my cool I like this one who has big brown eyes But he don’t like to talk, he’d rather look at my thighs I said, ‘Talkin’s nice, you know, You really oughta give it a chance’ He said he’d rather drink and dance Drink and dance He’s gonna have another drink And try to find a little romance Drink and dance Drink and dance Some would say that he’s thrown his life away ‘Cause all he does is drink and dance And then I watched this big blonde woman stagger up to the bar And she shot me a look that was brighter than a shooting star She laughed at me and said, ‘What’s your deal? You look like a kid who lost her Happy Meal.’ I said, ‘Thinkin’s nice, you know, You really oughta give it a chance’ She said she’d rather drink and dance Drink and dance She’s gonna have another drink And try to find a little romance Drink and dance Drink and dance Some would say that she’s thrown her life away ‘Cause all she does is drink and dance Every Friday night At the same old bar by the same stoplight Well, maybe she’s right Maybe I should loosen up And have a little fun tonight I said, ‘Hey, brown eyes, I got a gal here I’d like you to meet’ And two minutes later neither one of them had missed a beat And then I went and put a dollar in the music machine And these two young lovers were a sight to be seen I said, ‘Matchmakin’s nice, you know, I’m really glad I gave it chance’ And now I watch them drink and dance Drink and dance They’re gonna have another drink And try to find a little romance Drink and dance Drink and dance Some would say that I’ve thrown my life away ‘Cause I don’t like to drink and dance Don’t like to drink and dance

Miami 03:23
MIAMI © 2019 by Heather Pierson They got married in Miami On a Friday afternoon He was nervous as could be And she was over the moon They didn’t bother with flowers Or a big white wedding cake And in less than an hour All others they swore to forsake Some said it would never last And I might have been inclined to agree But when a boy meets a girl his whole damn world comes to life The courtship was world record fast They were both swept off of their feet And after date number three he asked her to be his wife So they got married in Miami So in love but just a little too soon The day before her birthday On an Oklahoma Friday afternoon They met over dinner and shots And true love they both thought they found And after just twelve days they decided to say ‘I do’ But the fire was swift and hot And it burned right down to the ground And by the time I arrived the romance in life was through She used to warn me about Miami Saying, ‘Don’t you dare do the same Make sure you know your man Before you go and take his name’

SAD AND SORRY © 2019 by Heather Pierson I thought your life had turned out better Than you could ever hope it to be But still you liked to sit around and cry ‘Everyone is better off than me’ Just so sad and sorry And sittin’ all alone Just so sad and sorry Ungrateful to the bone When you smiled the whole world was singin’ And I could hum along with the tune But when you were blue it was all I could do Not to holler what I thought of you You’re so sad and sorry And sittin’ all alone Just so sad and sorry Ungrateful to the bone I never thought I’d hear myself sayin’ That you were right and I was wrong But I just couldn’t see what was in front of me I didn’t listen and now you’re gone And now I’m sad and sorry And I’m sittin’ all alone Just so sad and sorry And I’m lonely to the bone Just so sad and sorry And now I wish you’d come home

WHERE WILL YOU GO © 2019 by Heather Pierson Do you think you know what happens when you die? Some say you meet a bearded man up in the sky Some say there is a fate much worse Awaiting those who lie and sin and curse And for heaven you'd be foolish not to try But I'm not here to debate your theology I'm only entertaining curiosity About the destination of your body Chorus: Where will you go when you die? I mean your body, not the you that you call I When the time has come for your 'in memoriam' Will you be headed for the crematorium? Or perhaps a box of pine Will suit your carcass fine Purchased at your local grief emporium It's a lesson nobody wants to learn The pros and cons of a coffin and of an urn And the bad news is everybody gets a turn Chorus A mushroom suit would be quite cute In a rocket ship would be pretty hip In the dirt behind a yurt In the ground at the edge of town There's just so many creative ways To properly dispose of your remains So you better get to thinkin' 'bout these things And long before the fat lady sings 'Cause you will leave behind a mess If your family has to guess And there's no telling what kind of antics that could bring So, for goodness sake, write down a reminder For when death arrives unannounced in your foyer You better pick up the phone and call a decent lawyer And tell 'im Chorus I mean you The walking, talking, heart-still-beating and excreting you Not the you behind your eyes The you that you call I

Way Too Long 01:47
WAY TOO LONG © 2019 by Heather Pierson Now that I’ve known the taste of your skin I’ll never be out of trouble again It’s been too long Way too long Since I held you Well I know it’s been just an hour or two But I just can’t get enough of you It’s been too long Way too long Since I held you Why can’t I keep my mind still? I’m stronger than this I don’t need your kiss For now I’ll keep my glass of wine filled And try to put out the flame Of this dangerous game Well now that you know what I’m going through Maybe you’d like to go through it too It’s been too long Way too long Since I held you It’s been too long Way too long Since I held you

SOMETHIN’ THAT AIN’T MINE © 2019 by Heather Pierson Where do you get off thinkin’ that you’re so clever and wise? You think you’ve pulled that wool right over my eyes Red handed, it’s your crime So why should I do your time? You’re tryin’ to hand me somethin’ that ain’t mine You’re just tryin’ to hand me somethin’ that ain’t mine Don’t you dare try to feed me that worn out line You’re just tryin’ to hand me somethin’ that ain’t mine Will you ever stop passing the blame? Can’t you see all the madness it brings? Well you just don’t seem to care about a goddamn thing Well this is your wake up call But I don’t think you can hear it at all You’re tryin’ to hand me somethin’ that ain’t mine You’re just tryin’ to hand me somethin’ that ain’t mine Don’t you dare try to feed me that worn out line You’re just tryin’ to hand me somethin’ that ain’t mine It ain’t mine No it never was mine Don’t you dare try to feed me that worn out line You’re just tryin’ to hand me somethin’ that ain’t mine You’re tryin’ to hand me somethin’ that ain’t mine You’re just tryin’ to hand me somethin’ that ain’t mine Don’t you dare try to feed me that worn out line You’re just tryin’ to hand me somethin’ that ain’t mine It ain’t mine No it never was mine It ain’t mine No it never was

Willy 02:51
WILLY © 2019 by Heather Pierson You were just a boy when we first met Eyes all full of fear and wonderment Though it took us all a while We were able to coax that smile ‘Cause you were a boy looking for something more You were just a boy when your girl was born You took the whole world in your arms that blessed morn But the joy was not enough To see you through when things got tough ‘Cause you were a boy looking for something more Sometimes love is just the thing To make your marrow sing But other times it’s just too great a thing to bear Well I’ve been there too And though I don’t believe you’ve found That quiet sacred ground I’ll keep an eye out for it just for you You were just a boy when your world went dark The wind that left you cold blew out your spark And now it’s our turn to grieve For the man I do believe Simply grew tired of looking for something more Sometimes love is just the thing To make your marrow sing But other times it’s just too great a thing to bear Well I’ve been there too And though I don’t believe you’ve found That quiet sacred ground I’ll keep an eye out for it just for you

TAKE THE TIME © 2019 by Heather Pierson Time is short and there’s so much to do Hard though we try, the work is never done Every breath is a chance to start anew To share your love and joy with everyone Take the time while you can Take the time while you can Take the time, take the time To show your love When your life seems to run away from you And you feel an aching in your bones Every soul shares this same path with you So don’t be afraid, you don’t walk alone Take the time while you can Take the time while you can Take the time, take the time To show your love Take the time to notice Take the time to feel Take the time to reach out for what is real Take the time while you can Take the time while you can Take the time, take the time To show your love
